Latest Updates to The GCCF Maine Coon Registration Policy - April 2024

Maine Coon Registration Policy – Next Step

DNA testing has been a requirement since 1st Jan 2024, from June 2024 the following also applies. If you wish to register or transfer a Maine Coon cat onto the GCCF active (breeding) register, it must have had DNA testing completed and be negative for HCMmc, PKDef & SMA genes. Imported Maine Coon cats from other registries must also have additional DNA tests done before they can be added to the active register. These are listed in the Maine Coon Registration Policy. If your Maine Coon is already registered on the GCCF active register before 1st June 2024 deadline, you can still continue to breed from it after this date, even if it is not homozygous negative for all three genes and then hopefully you will be able to produce homozygous negative offspring to continue your breed lines into the future.A “Frequently Asked Questions” article about the Maine Coon Registration Policy is now available. Click here to view the FAQs. We hope that this will help to answer questions that are currently being asked, with regard to the Maine Coon Registration Policy and DNA Testing requirements.

All Maine Coon cats registered on the Active Register from 1st January 2024 MUST be tested for the one known Maine Coon HCM gene (i.e., HCMmc: the A31P mutation in the MYBPC3 gene), SMA, and  PK-def. From 1 January 2024 Homozygous positive cats born after this date will not be eligible for Active registration. From 1 June 2024 Heterozygous cats born after this date will not be eligible for Active registration. (See Testing section below).

Imports - Maine Coons now require 8 DNA tests to be imported into the GCCF on the active (breeding) register, these are: HCMmc (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Maine Coon Type, SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy), PKDef (Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency), Polydactyl, Chocolate, Cinnamon, Siamese (cs) and Burmese (cb) Colour Restriction.

Testing: The swab and microchip must be taken and verified by a vet. Please contact GCCF Office (Email: info@gccfcats.org or telephone 01278 427575) for information on which test labs are approved for conducting these DNA diagnostic tests.

Importing Neutered Cats from another organisation - DNA testing is not required for importing neutered cats providing all the following criteria have been met:

1. A Certificate of Neutering is supplied to including the cat’s details (registered name, date of birth, registration number, sex and microchip number (microchip number has been scanned and verified by the vet).

2. The cat does not exhibit any of the following traits: polydactyly (extra toes), Chocolate, Cinnamon and Siamese (cs) and Burmese (cb) colours/patterns.
