The first Maine Coons were imported into Britain way back in 1984 and the
first kittens were born, in quarantine, in January 1985. Later that year several
Maine Coon lovers got together to form, what was originally the British Maine
Coon Cat Club with the eventual aim to become affiliated to the GCCF. Two of
those Founder members were Sue and Tex Morgan who took an active part in the
Club as Secretary, Membership Secretary and Treasurer until their retirement
from the committee - they are now our joint Presidents. They worked hard, with
the GCCF, to set our Standard of Points which is based on the CFA Standard. The
"British" was later dropped from the name, not out of any sense of
arrogance but to make the Club name appear in the correct sequence in magazines
etc. where people expected to see "Maine Coons".
Back in 1985 the Maine Coon did not have recognition with the GCCF and it
took much hard work and paperwork, mainly by Daphne and Steve Butters and those
owners who spent many Saturdays showing their cats, to progress up through
Preliminary and Provisional statuses before finally achieving Championship
Status in June 1994.
In 1999, because of the high number of Maine Coons being shown, the CGGF
granted two colour splits for the breed - Brown/Blue Tabby +/- White and Any
Other Colour. In 2005, a second colour split was granted, the silver tabby
series. We currently have three colour classes - Brown Tabby Series, Silver
tabby Series and Any Other Colour.
In 2003, the club held its fouth championship show at the Frank F Harrison
Community Centre, Wallsall, West Midlands, with an entry of 141 Maine Coons, the
largest number to be seen under one roof in Britain. The club now holds it show
in Tamworth, Staffs. You can follow the link
"The Club Show" to see some of the past winners.
The Club holds various social functions, an annual "virtual"
photographic cat show and is heavily involved in the frequent Maine Coon Breed
Seminars organised by the GCCF Maine Coon Breed Advisory Committee.
Any of the committee would be only too pleased for you to contact them by
phone or e-mail for a chat about the Club or the cats.
